Our League
Around 1998-99, the BVSSA league was known as the ChesDel league. It was comprised of five teams. The Commissioner was George McCann.
As the league grew over the years to eight teams the Management of the league created the Silver and Gold Divisions because of the age range and skills of the players.
In 2004 Al Golub became the Commissioner of the League. It was then decided to change the name of the league to BVSS. Many players at that time were coming from all over, not just Delaware and Chester counties.
Al was the Commissioner from 2004 through 2006. During those years they decided to make the Wall of Fame sign. John Hagee was responsible for adding new names every year if there were players over 75 with 5 years of Spring play. In addition, there would be a banquet every year at the end of the season.
In 2006-2007 All Star games were played in mid-season.
At the beginning of the 2007 season, John Farley became the Commissioner. During his first year, he put together a computerized list of players with the assistance of Sue Pierson (Hap Pierson’s wife). Finally, we started to get away from paper.
A new Wall of Fame sign was created by Lane Signs and approved by John Farley and Joe Ganly. It is updated yearly adding new members as they qualify.
Doing the Farley years, the Gold Division managers built their teams by choosing players for their teams. In the Silver Division, the Managers would make up teams. Once they all agreed on the equality of the teams, they would pick a number one through four out of a hat. That number would be their team. They put together some pretty good teams. Team selection methods have varied over the years always looking for closely competitive teams. Season-end banquets continued, usually at the Concord Golf Club. It was a fun luncheon for the players and wives recognizing the winning teams and players from the Spring season from both Divisions.
At the end of 2009, Commissioner Farley turned the league over to Jack Williams.
Jack Williams revamped the League upon taking over and with the help of his Board and Managers ensured more parity across all teams.
John Lundell became commissioner in 2015. The league expanded to 4 Gold & 8 Silver teams. Gold moved to Mondays and Wednesdays, and Silver stayed on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Lee Hartwig took over in 2023 and expanded league voting management to 4 members, Gold Director, Silver Director, Treasurer, and Commissioner. New website was created, League Bylaws were written, and we gained certification by the IRS as a 501c7,
Current Board 2024:
